top things to do in san francisco bay area

World's Top Surfers at Ocean Beach, SF, Nov 1-12, 2011

by Mike
(San Mateo)

UPDATE: 11/2/11 Just saw 39 yr old Kelly Slater, USA, win his 11th world title ... the most ever in history. However, there is still 2 more days of live competition to watch via live stream video.

You may not know it, but Ocean Beach has some unusual world class surf with waves coming from all directions at heights from 2-12 feet. The locals consider this area more of an underground surf scene but recently Ocean Beach became one of the 12 stops on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour.

Sometime between November 1-12, 2011, 36 of the world's top surfers will pick the best 4 four full days to compete for a $425,000 purse and the world championship. They plan to take off from Stairway 18-20 across from Beach Chalet Restaurant in Golden Gate Park (note: the alternate location is Kelly's Cove at Stairway 1 near the Cliff House).
