Stella Alpina Osteria, food from the Italian Alps in Burlingame?

by George
(San Mateo)

One of the best northern Italian restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area is hidden on the basement floor of a Burlingame, CA, side street, of all places. Everything we've had there was tasty starting with the ciabatta (Italian for "slipper") yeast bread and ending with the latte. For example, the veal shank with creamy Mascarpone cheese polenta was excellent. Service and atmosphere are very pleasant too. Stella Alpina is owned by an experienced native Italian Chef and you can tell.

Somewhat pricey but not outrageous and definitely worth it. The 70 seat restaurant is full several nights of the week so get a reservation or get there early and take your chances.

Hours: 5-8:30 pm nightly.
Location: 401 Primrose Rd, Burlingame, CA
