Water Dog Lake Trail
A nice little 1-mile hike in Belmont, CA
See the map below for the best trail head we’ve found to access Water Dog Lake. The trail itself is a wide fire road called Lake Road Trail that gradually climbs up from Lyall Way, along a beautiful chaparral canyon for about 1/2 mile (1 mile round trip), to a small dammed off lake. Look for the lake on the left at the first fork.
This portion of Lake Road Trail is quite popular with dog lovers. The dogs enjoy swimming in Water Dog Lake and we haven’t noticed any signs prohibiting such activity. However, we did notice several signs warning about mountain lions and rattlesnakes. Luckily these native critters seem to rarely, if ever, be a problem if you keep your dog on leash.
There are several longer trail options in the canyon but some can get very steep and remote. One easy one, the Water Dog Lake Loop trail, begins and ends at the east end of Water Dog Lake. See #13 on the city’s open space trail map for details.
