Suppenkuche -- Wunderbar German Food in Hayes Valley

by Greta
(Mid-Peninsula)

On a cold day I went to Suppenkuche in Hayes Valley with my older, sophisticated, europhile boyfriend. Despite being of northern European extraction myself, my limited experience of German cooking had not been good, so I was hesitant about coming along on this adventure. However, on previous Sunday mornings I had seen the lines outside the door to this establishment , so one morning when we were up early, I agreed to try it if there were no lines.

We were there at opening time on the minute(I am convinced this is the only way to avoid a wait), and got to enjoy a very generous portion of Wiener Schnitzel and potatoes. It was quite good.

The place soon filled up with patrons who enthusiastically did not only enjoy this somewhat heavy early morning fare, but also the selections of beer. We sat next to two friendly New Yorkers, who appeared to be in their 70s. On the other side were a cluster of what appeared to be college students. Everyone else was somewhere in between.

I will go back to Suppenkuche once the weather gets cold again, and if I get European visitors I will bring them too! Service is friendly, portions generous and tasty, and next time I will try the beer for breakfast!
