Stern Grove, San Francisco

One of many paths & grassy spots

It's been decades since we went to the free music concerts at Stern Grove Festival on Sunday afternoons from June-August each year. They are still popular, too crowded actually, but now you sit in a fancy outdoor amphitheater rather than on the grass under bushes like we used to do.

When revisiting Stern Grove last weekend, without the crowds, I was surprised at just how big it is -- 15 blocks long and 3 blocks wide. The main grove near 19th Ave/Sloat Blve is in a ravine and has several nice shaded trails featuring eucalyptus, redwood, & fir trees and nasturtiums. At the west end is a lake.

In the center of Stern Grove is large grassy grassy Pine Lake meadow where dogs and their humans can play unleashed. All around are many other trails and smaller grassy areas for the doggy set as well.

Location: North of Sloat Blvd between 19th Ave & 34th Ave.
