Old Mission San Jose & Museum
Interesting mission in Fremont, CA
Old Mission San Jose was founded in 1797 at the site of the Ohlone village of Oroysom where the soil was fertile and water plentiful. The original complex consisted of over 100 adobe buildings and by 1830 there were 1,886 Mission Indians living in this area along with a few soldiers and priests.
The Mission Museum Wing consists of nine rooms, plus a gift store, telling the interesting history of mission life. You can also visit the beautiful old adobe church, completed in 1809, destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1868, and eventually reconstructed to be a near-perfect replica of the original. Inside is historic hard-to-find Spanish organ used in several concerts each year. On the north side of the church is the Mission cemetery where many pioneers of Mission San Jose are buried.
