Moraga Steps, San Francisco
The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project
The delightful mosaic-tiled Moraga Stairs start at Moraga St & 16th Ave and climb up to 15th Ave. See map below. More than 220 neighbors sponsored the hand-made animal, bird, and fish mosaic tiles now imbedded on the vertical risers of each step. The overall visitor’s experience is an beautiful artistic surprise quite unexpected within an ordinary residential neighborhood. Only in San Francisco! P.S.. While you are there don’t forget to check out the view at Grandview Park (see below) near the top of the steps
Moraga tiled steps – An unexpectedly beautiful surprise!
As you climb these 163 mosaic steps stop to enjoy nice western views over the Sunset District. And, if you jog a bit south on 15th Ave and climb on up to Grand View Park you can see some of the most fabulous 360-degree views in the entire City including the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Park, SF Bay, and the Financial District. We enjoy them even more than the views at Twin Peaks.
As an aside, if you happen to like to climb stairs for exercise there are several more in the area. For example, the following stairways: 14th Ave Steps on the east side of Grand View Park (14th/Moraga); 15th Ave Steps Park (Lawton St/Lomita Ave); Steps at the corner of Lawton St/16th Ave; Mt Ln west off 14th Ave just south of Ortega St (across from Rocky Outcrop Park).
The Moraga Street Steps also happen to be conveniently located just 3 blocks east of 19th Ave. So, for a nice treat, quickly check them out next time you are in the Sunset District.
