This is a unique local thing to do. In fact, Hellyer Park has the only velodrome in Northern California (note: there are 24 in the US with 3 down south near LA). A velodrome is a banked oval track for bicycle racing where special track bikes with a single fixed rear gear and no brakes can get up to 52 mph. The Hellyer Park track is about .2 miles long and is banked about 25 degrees.

There are a variety of races including Friday night racing during the summer from 7-9:30 pm and even some national championship trials. Check out www.ridethetrack.com for race & practice times, directions and other such details.

Watching, including practices and Friday night races, is usually free but it does cost $6 to bring your car into Hellyer Park. Sometimes during the day we will just park a little west on Hellyer Ave and walk in to get a little exercise and to save six bucks.

Location: Hellyer Park, 995 Hellyer Ave off Hwy 101, San Jose.
