Layang Layang … tasty Malaysian food
Don’t let the unassuming exterior fool you!
Layang Layang is a small Malaysian restaurant at 1480 S De Anza Blvd/Sharon Dr in San Jose, CA. See map and details below. Except for the big front sign, the building & concrete parking area are definitely unimpressive.

The exterior, combined with my “health-nut” friend’s penchant for raw chewy vegetables, almost made me turn down her suggestion to give Layang Layang a try. However, I finally gave in since she said the sea food soup and green papaya salad would be just the thing after six miles of hiking at nearby Rancho San Antonio County Park. It would be a “health” day.
We started with bread, Tom Yam soup and green papaya salad. Also, Thai iced coffee to refill our depleted caffeine reserves after the hot hike. When my friend ordered a particular bread our server says: “Are you sure? You usually order the Roti Canai with curry dipping sauce.” Of course our server was right. What is hard to believe is that she remembered my friend and her preferences given how busy the place always is.
Bottom line … both us are regular customers now since this good experience! It was all very tasty, pleasant, and interesting at reasonable prices!
By the way, be prepared to wait, especially if you show up during prime lunch or dinner hours. The locals are well aware of this place and you will not be alone in your quest to savour the popular specials. On a weekday at 2 pm, however, we had plenty of tables to choose from since they close at 3 pm (until 5 pm) on weekdays. If you don’t know what to order at a Malaysian restaurant just look to see what specials the neighboring tables order or ask the friendly waitress.
