Stern Grove, 19th and Sloat, SF
Sunday concerts, trails, & a leash-free dog park
It has been decades since we went to the free music concerts outdoors at Sigmund Stern Grove on Sunday afternoons in the summer. They are even more popular now, too crowded actually, but if you get there early enough you can sit in a fancy outdoor amphitheater rather than on the grass under the bushes like we used to do.
In 2018 these free world-class concerts will be playing 10 consecutive Sundays from 6/17/18-8/19/18, from 2-5 pm at the Concert Meadow amphitheater. Definitely come early if you hope to get a seat. See Stern Grove Festival Schedule for details. By the way, another place to go for over 90 open air free events (various days of the week) by excellent artists is the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival.
When revisiting Sigmund Stern Grove recently, without the crowds, I was surprised at just how big it is — 15 blocks long and 3 blocks wide. The main grove near 19th Ave/Sloat Blvd is in a ravine and has several nice shaded trails featuring eucalyptus, redwood, & fir trees and nasturtium flowers. At the far western end is a nature trail around a lake.
Near the center of Stern Grove is large grassy Pine Lake Dog Park where dogs and their humans can play unleashed. Of course, all around are many other trails and smaller grassy areas for the doggy set as well.
